BEAUTY BOX, a dynamic girl group under BY-U Entertainment, made their debut on September 23, 2021, with the single album Beyond of BB - and if they're not on your K-pop radar yet, it's time to adjust your frequency. The group brings a refreshing and diverse energy to the K-pop scene, combining talents from different backgrounds to create a unique musical experience.
Comprised of four members, Beauty Box offers a diverse array of talents, each member contributing their own vibrant color to the group. Gahyun provides a steady hand and calm presence, guiding the team with her experience. Sori serves as the group's musical backbone, her powerful voice defining Beauty Box's sonic identity. The addition of Chaeeun in 2023 brought new dimensions to their performances, expanding the group's creative possibilities. ompleting the quartet is Via, also a 2023 addition, who brings an international flair as the group's maknae and sole Indonesian member. This blend of personalities and talents allows BEAUTY BOX to explore a wide spectrum of musical styles and concepts.
Since their debut, BEAUTY BOX has been steadily expanding its musical repertoire and connecting with fans. Following their initial single album, they released the subsequent projects B-Step and Higher Up. Their latest album, B-Turn, marks a significant milestone as it's the first full project featuring new members Via and Chaeeun. This release not only showcases the group's musical growth but also introduces a fresh dynamic with the additions, blending Via and Chaeeun's unique vocal colors and styles with the established BEAUTY BOX sound. B-Turn represents an exciting new chapter for the group, offering fans a chance to experience the enhanced synergy of the BEAUTY BOX.
In an exclusive interview, BEAUTY BOX opens up about their latest album, B-Turn. The members provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creative journey that shaped this release, offer reflections on the unique chemistry they've developed as a group, and share a heartfelt message for their devoted fans, WIBBON.
Hello BEAUTY BOX! Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. To start, please introduce yourselves and describe your role in BEAUTY BOX.
BEAUTY BOX: Light twinkle! Hello, we are BEAUTY BOX!
Gahyun: Hello! I'm Gahyun, the dimpled leader and vocalist of BEAUTY BOX!
Sori: Hello, I'm Sori, the voice of BEAUTY BOX!
Chaeeun: Hello, I'm Chaeeun, the taekwondo girl of BEAUTY BOX!
Via: Hello, I'm Via, the rapper and Indonesian member of BEAUTY BOX!
Congratulations on the release of your second EP, B-Turn! How does it feel to share this new music with your fans?
Gahyun: First of all, I'm very happy that we can be together with fans again with new music. I think this album is more meaningful than previous albums. The reason is that this is the second album with Chaeeun and Via, and unlike the previous album, we prepared not only songs but also dances together, so it feels new and more meaningful.
Sori: Since it's an album that's been released after a long time, I was really looking forward to it while preparing. Also, I think it's a summer song that can show the color of our BEAUTY BOX well, so I prepared thinking that WIBBON would like it, too. Everyone likes it, right? (laughs)
Chaeeun: This is my first album, and I'm happy because fans liked it more than I expected. The response from others has been good. Especially in the process of preparing “일루와(COME TO ME),” I'm really looking forward to showing it to the public, and I'm excited.
Via: It feels great! This is my official first release with the group, so it's an exciting and new experience.
If you could describe B-Turn in one word, what would it be, and why?
Gahyun: I would choose the word 'summer'. The cover that suits summer, the jacket photos that suit summer, and also the music video, song, dance, etc. that suit summer - all parts seem to start and end with summer, which makes me think of the single word 'summer.' In other words, you could say, “BEAUTY BOX is back.”
Sori: I want to express it as BEAUTY BOX. It feels like an album that defines the colors of our four BEAUTY BOX members, and since we're greeting each other after a long time, I want to make our group known for sure!
Chaeeun: I would choose the word 'together'. I think another start was possible because we were together, including the fans, company people, and members (laughs).
Via: Comfortable. I feel like the songs that are in this album are to be 'easy listening' songs, so they're comfortable to listen to.
What message do you hope to convey to your fans through B-Turn and the title track "일루와(COME TO ME)"?
Gahyun: Through “일루와(COME TO ME),” I want to convey a sense of coolness to the fans. I hope you have a cool summer with BEAUTY BOX's "일루와(COME TO ME)" during the hot summer!
Sori: I want to give you a feeling of excitement. I hope you can spend more enjoyable days watching our cool yet exciting new song and dance in the hot summer.
Chaeeun: I want to convey happiness. I think it's a really good song to listen to when going for a drive. So, when you go out, enjoy the happiness while listening to our song!!
Via: It's a fun summer song, so I think the point of the song and the album is to have a good time listening to it.
What inspired the concept and storyline behind the "일루와(COME TO ME)" music video?
Gahyun: When the company played this song for us, they said it was music that reminds you of the sea. They said it would be good as a comeback song after two years and that we would shoot the MV with the concept of going on a summer vacation. The content was my love story. Should I say it's a story about Sori, Chaeeun, and Via protecting Gahyun, who doesn't know about men?
The music video for "일루와(COME TO ME)" was filmed in Vietnam. Can you share any memorable experiences from the shoot?
Gahyun: First of all, the weather was too hot, and there was a scene in the MV where I was pushing a bicycle. Originally, that scene was supposed to be me riding the bicycle. But because I couldn't ride a bicycle, I had to practice on-site. Practicing riding a bicycle under that hot sun was so hot - I was nervous and anxious. I think that time was really memorable and difficult for me. But in the end, I couldn't ride it, so the scene was changed to pushing the bicycle, which I think was fortunate, and I'm even more glad that it came out so beautifully.
Sori: I'm the member who's most vulnerable to summer, and sure enough, the sunlight in Vietnam was incredible! I think the hardest part was that my eyes wouldn't open well. I wanted to open my eyes wide or make bright expressions to match the mood of the song, but I was upset that it wasn't working well. Still, I'm very grateful that they seem to have chosen only the pretty scenes to put in the music video.
Chaeeun: I had a solo scene walking alone on the beach. But the sand there was so, so
soft and fluffy!! So walking on that sand was really hard.
Via: I was the first member to shoot, so I remember feeling nervous but also excited. The set was really pretty, so I wanted to do well.
What are you most proud of with this new release, and why?
Gahyun: I think I'm most proud that our usual good relationship with the members could be shown in the MV. I'm so glad that it seems to have shown our usual relationship well, not a fabricated one, and I think it's one of the many reasons why the MV turned out well.
Sori: I'm really proud of Via's rap part. I've always been amazed by Via's rap-making skills, and in this “일루와(COME TO ME)” song, too, she did it so perfectly. I want to tell her she did a great job, and it's really cool. Via, you're the best!!
Chaeeun: There's a scene in the MV where we're playing in the water, and there was a moment where I thought, "Huh? Did I hug someone?" But I was proud that it came out naturally because we're close with the members, hugging and playing around.
Via: I am proud that I can directly participate in writing lyrics and rap.
What’s your favorite way to unwind or relax after a busy day?
Gahyun: I think it's when I'm eating with the members. I'm not sure if eating is considered rest, but I enjoy talking with them while eating so much that I consider it rest!
Sori: For me, the best rest is taking a refreshing shower, giving myself a massage with a foam roller, reading a book, watching music shows, or watching animation (laughs).
Chaeeun: For me, it's changing clothes as soon as I get home, turning on the fan right away, and playing games while lying on the bed.
Via: I like to watch a show or movie, read books, or go to sleep.
If you could swap roles with any other member for a day, who would you choose, and why?
Gahyun: I'd be Via. You know, Via is the only foreign member among us. So I'm curious about what she feels and thinks while living in Korea, as her thoughts and actions might be different. That's why I'd like to live as Via for a day.
Sori: I'd also be Via!! (laughs) As Gahyun said, since she's the only foreign member, I'd like to become Via directly to experience what difficulties she faces and what cultural differences there are. Then, I'd like to return to myself and help Via.
Chaeeun: I'd be Via! Via is really skilled with her hands and very versatile. I'd like to cook and eat food using Via's cooking skills.
Via: I think it would be fine to switch with any of the members because they all have different experiences, and I want to try to see things from their perspective.
Do you follow any traditions or rituals before a performance or recording session?
Gahyun: I think it's not eating. It's not something special like Chaeeun's routine, but if I had to think of something, not eating might be the only routine that's uniquely mine.
Sori: I loosen up my neck, drink water, then take a big mouthful of water again and slowly sip it little by little. At this time, if I swallow the water very slowly while stretching, I'm all prepared!
Chaeeun: In the morning, I go to the bathroom, put on my contact lenses on the way to the salon, and when all the hair and makeup are done, I eat a few kimbap rolls in the car, then brush my teeth and gargle!
Via: I just generally do stretches or vocal warm-ups to prepare myself.
For new fans, what do you think is BEAUTY BOX’s distinctive charm as a group, and what charms do each of you bring to the group?
Gahyun: I think our group's charm is that each member has a different appeal. As for my personal charm, I think it's my dimples, which I show off every day and my occasionally quirky personality that sometimes shows.
Sori: I believe our charm lies in each member having a distinct character. First, I think I'm the member who can showcase the charm of speaking in dialect. I also think I can show my appeal as the main vocalist. Oh, and I'm secretly quite funny! (laughs)
Chaeeun: I think our charm is that we're cheerful without hiding anything. As for my personal charm, it's probably my athletic ability and the fun I have when I use funny filters without being shy during Instagram live sessions.
Via: Because I am the rapper of the group, I feel like I bring my charm through my writings, especially my rap parts.
Looking ahead, what are your hopes and goals for BEAUTY BOX in the next year?
Gahyun: My hope and goal are to meet fans from more diverse countries in the future. I'll work hard to make that happen!
Sori: My hope and goal are to meet WIBBONs at various music shows and perform for WIBBONs all around the world! I'll work hard to make sure that happens.
Chaeeun: My goal is to visit countries all over the world once and meet fans from many different countries!
Via: I hope that we get to promote more new things and appear in more music shows.
