In an exclusive interview, James shares insights into the inspiration behind "Break For You" and reflects on his journey as a musician. As he continues to make waves in the music industry, James Lee remains a true force to be reckoned with, leaving an indelible mark on the global music scene.
Hello James Lee! Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. To kick things off, what initially drew you to a career in music?
Thanks for having me. I had a class in elementary school, and the teacher loaned me a trumpet. It was a way to socialize and meet new friends, and it was interesting to see and feel progress. Afterwards I played in a few bands, and it was so fun just to be able to create and cover music I enjoyed.
Congratulations on your latest single, "Break for You!” Please share a bit about the inspiration behind the song and what listeners can expect from it.
“Break For You” is one of the most important songs I've ever written. I feel like sometimes a song can save a life. Coldplay has a song called “Fix You” and it has an energy that feels so hopeful. This song is my response to that. Through tragedy, I found it easy to empathize with others going through their own challenges. I found it's not always easy to give comfort, but there's a moment when i see my loved ones hurt that I'm willing to sacrifice anything for them.
"Break for You” features Moon Kim and Sooyoon Kim. What was it like working with them, and how did their contributions shape the song?
Moon and Sooyoon are both super-talented musicians and growing up with them pushed me to become the songwriter I am today.
How does “Break For You” fit into your broader artistic vision?
The foundation of my music has always been sharing my emotions and connecting with the listener, but recently, I've returned to playing more with the tone and sound design of each instrument. I started playing bass again, and it has been a challenge but so much fun. It reminds me of why I started music in the first place. This has inspired me to write many more rock songs lately.
Your music often carries powerful messages and emotions. How do you hope your listeners connect with your music on a personal level?
My music feels like my diary and serves as a way to paint in between the words we say. Just like Words can mean different things to different people, music can amplify and bring out different emotions in the listener than the words being spoken. I hope it reminds my listeners they are not alone when facing these confusing but powerful moments.
As a songwriter and producer, what aspects of the creative process do you find most fulfilling, and how do you stay inspired to continue creating?
I love the idea that music has rules that are meant to be broken. I also love to cooperate with other artists to push my boundaries and find new ways to create and express myself. As for staying inspired, music is something I will do until the day I die. It is a part of me, and I don't know what i would do without it.
How do you approach writing and producing music for different artists with diverse styles and backgrounds?
As a producer for other artists, the most important thing is for me to trust my gut. I need to remember not to force them to do what I want but to pull out the things that I think are beautiful about the artist. Being sure of my taste while being open to new ideas has always served me best.
With your diverse experience across genres like metal, indie rock, and K-pop, how do you navigate blending these influences into your own distinct sound as a solo artist, and how has your musical style evolved over the years?
As I've gotten older, I realize the most important thing is the message. What am I trying to say with this song, and can I say it in a single sentence? I think all of the music I write is impacted by the first shows I used to go to. Because my roots are in a rock band, I love to play with arrangement details, whether it be quirky, witty, or sincere. I think it all has to do with what I wanna say and how I want to say it.
You've toured worldwide and performed at numerous festivals and concerts. Can you share any memorable moments or experiences from your time on the road?
My first tour ever, I believe I was 17 or 18, and our van broke down in Provost, Utah. We spent a few days playing ‘Magic the Gathering’ in a Napa Auto Parts parking lot until a fan helped us book a hotel (because we were broke). I remember eating Wendy's three days in a row and being disgusted with myself. After that, we got invited to play some shows at random houses where it just felt like we were jamming in the garage, but the best part of it all was just being so close with the fans who loved our music. At the time, I didn't know how sketchy our situation was, but in retrospect, it's one of the best memories of my childhood.
Many of your fans in the U.S. are eagerly awaiting the chance to see you perform live. Can you share any plans or hopes for touring?
I have a ton of music coming out this year including two more of my own songs next month. I have quite a few shows booked in Asia coming up, and if there's enough traction, I hope that I'm able to play again in the States sometime soon.
Your musical journey has been marked by resilience and determination, especially in the face of adversity. What advice would you offer to aspiring musicians who may be navigating their own challenges in pursuing their dreams?
Enjoy the ride, and don't let the low points keep you down. They are part of your story, so engage with those moments in a way that propels you forward. And don't be afraid or overwhelmed by the fact that you may have taken a step back sometimes before moving forward. In a world run by dopamine and short attention spans, it's important to remember it can be a slow game. Consistency and growth are more important than a flash of brilliance.
Can you give us any hints or teasers about what's next for James Lee in terms of upcoming projects or releases?
I have a music video coming out in April, and I think it's the best one I've ever made. I cannot wait to share it with you guys, and it marks my return to the world of rock music.
Your fans are undoubtedly excited about your music, but they also appreciate connecting with you on a personal level. Please leave a message to them as they eagerly await your new music and future endeavors.
I love you guys so much. You are the reason I'm able to do what I love. I hope we can connect through music and that it can be a part of your day where you know you're not alone in this chaotic world.
