ONF talks about how their sound has evolved, what fans can expect from their latest album, and their deep appreciation for FUSE.
ONF, pronounced “On and Off,” is a six-member boy group under WM Entertainment known for their cinematic storytelling. They debuted on August 3, 2017, with their first mini album, On/Off, instantly captivating listeners with their unique sound and powerful performances. The group has two subunit teams—ON Team (Hyojin, E-Tion, and Minkyun) and OFF Team (Seungjun, Wyatt, and U)—although it’s rare, each time they’ve explored this dynamic in their music, it leaves a lasting impression. With their unique musical identity and deeply conceptual discography, ONF quickly built a dedicated fanbase known as FUSE. Their ability to blend intricate choreography with immersive world-building has set them apart in the industry.
Over the years, ONF has steadily evolved, exploring new sounds and narratives with each release. Their participation in MNet’s Road to Kingdom in 2020 propelled them to new heights, highlighting their bold stage performances and intricate musical arrangements. They continued their rise with critically acclaimed releases like Spin Off and their first full-length album, ONF: My Name, in 2021. In a rare move for a K-pop group, all five Korean members enlisted for military service simultaneously in late 2021, allowing them to return as a full group in June 2023. Their long-awaited comeback with Love Effect reignited their momentum, followed by their first-ever North American tour, 2024 ONF Concert [Spotlight] in North America. Now, with their second full-length album, PART 1 [ONF: MY IDENTITY], they embark on a new chapter, blending their signature storytelling with fresh sounds. Featuring the title track, “The Stranger,” along with subunit-driven songs and member contributions to songwriting and production, this album showcases ONF’s continued artistic evolution and ambition.
In an exclusive interview, ONF delves into the creative process behind their second full album PART 1 [ONF: MY IDENTITY], the hard work they have poured into the album, and their artistic growth. They share personal insights into their music and what FUSE can look forward to in this exciting new chapter.

Nice to meet you, ONF! Thanks for speaking to Hellokpop. Congratulations on the release of PART 1 [ONF: MY IDENTITY]!" Can you tell us more about this album? What messages or feelings do you hope fans take away from your new music?
만나서 반갑습니다, ONF! Hellokpop과 이야기해 주셔서 감사합니다. PART 1 [ONF: MY IDENTITY] 발매를 축하드립니다! 이 앨범에 대해 좀 더 알려주세요. 팬들이 이 새로운 음악을 통해 어떤 메시지나 감정을 얻길 바라시나요?
HYOJIN: In this second full-length album, PART 1 [ONF: MY IDENTITY], you’ll get to hear new unit songs from the ON team and OFF teams, as well as experience a variety of fresh and diverse genres. Also, I hope that people who listen to our album will feel that our team can pull off any concept and genre and that our music brings them lots of energy.
이번 정규 2집 PART 1 [ONF: MY IDENTITY] 에서는 온팀과 오프팀의 새로운 유닛곡을 만나 보실 수 있고, 다양하고 새로운 장르의 곡도 들어 보실 수 있는 앨범입니다. 많은 분들이 저희 앨범을 듣고 이 팀은 어떤 컨셉과 장르도 다 소화 가능하다는 것을 느끼셨으면 좋겠고 저희의 음악으로 많은 에너지를 얻으셨으면 좋겠습니다.
E-TION: “Do not be afraid of the unfamiliar and courageously take on challenges.” I hope our positive message can be conveyed through this album.
‘낯선 것에 두려워하지 말고 용기 있게 도전하는 마음’이요. 이번 앨범을 통해 저희의 긍정적인 메시지가 전달되길 바랍니다.
What does the title “ONF: MY IDENTITY” mean to you, and how does it reflect ONF’s musical journey?“
ONF: MY IDENTITY”라는 제목은 여러분에게 어떤 의미가 있으며, ONF의 음악적 여정을 어떻게 반영한다고 생각하시나요?
SEUNGJUN: As the album name suggests, it contains the meaning of showing our own unique colors rather than an absolute standard. ONF's musical journey can be said to be very challenging. And it is constantly moving forward to the future and evolving. Sometimes, it feels like there is no way out, but I think our music is something everyone can relate to and encourages them to challenge themselves.
앨범명처럼 절대적인 기준이 아닌 우리만의 색을 보여주자 라는 의미가 담겨있습니다. ONF의 음악적 여정은 굉장히 도전적이라고 할 수 있는데요, 계속해서 나아가고 발전하기도하고, 때론 길이 없다고 느껴질 때도 있지만, 모든 분들께 공감되고 도전할 수 있게 만들어 주는 것이 우리의 음악인 것 같습니다.
WYATT: As it's a full-length album, it also contains our own unique color that we've developed over the years and how mature ONF has become. Our musical journey as ONF always shows various images that are not limited to one, so I think it reflects interesting, fun, and challenging things like world travel.
정규 앨범인 만큼 저희가 달려온 저희만의 색깔과 지금까지 쌓아온 온앤오프라는 그룹이 얼마나 성숙해졌는지에 대한 면도 담겨 있습니다. 저희 온앤오프의 음악 여정은 언제나 하나에 국한되어있지 않은 여러 이미지를 보여주는 것 같아 세계 여행처럼 흥미롭고 재밌는 도전적이 것들이 반영이 된다고 생각이 됩니다.
If you could describe the title track “Stranger” in three words, what would they be and why?
타이틀곡 “Stranger”를 세 단어로 묘사한다면, 어떤 단어를 고르고 그 이유는 무엇인가요?
MINKYUN: First, there is ‘gun’. This title song’s choreography has gun-shaped hand movements, and I think this part is the key point. The second is ‘scat’ because I think the scat part plays a central role in the mood of the song. The third is ‘fuse’. This is because we worked hard to prepare this album for FUSE!
먼저, ‘총’인데요, 이번 타이틀곡 안무에 총 모양의 손동작이 있는데 이 부분이 키포인트 라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 두번째는 ‘스캣’인데요, 스캣 부분이 곡 분위기의 중심 역할을 한다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 세번째는 ‘퓨즈’입니다. 이번 앨범도 퓨즈를 위해서 열심히 준비했기 때문입니다!
U: ‘Travel,’ ‘passion,’ and ‘confidence.’ I chose these three words because I felt like I was on a ‘trip’ somewhere while listening to song or performing on stage, and the ‘passion’ in the lyrics seemed to boost my own ‘confidence’!
‘여행’, ’열정’, ’자신감’ 입니다. 노래를 듣거나 혹은 무대를 하는 동안 어딘가 ‘여행’을 하고 있는 듯한 느낌을 받고, 가사에도 있는 ‘열정’이 저만의 ‘자신감’을 업해주는 것 같아서 이 세 단어를 골라봤습니다!
What kind of performance or stage presence can fans expect from “The Stranger”? Are there any key choreography points you want them to notice?
“Stranger”에서 팬들이 기대할 수 있는 공연이나 무대 매너는 어떤 것들이 있을까요? 눈여겨봐야 할 주요 안무 포인트가 있다면 알려주세요.
U: In the “The Stranger” choreography, there are many parts where we express the shape of a gun with our hands. In addition, there are choreography movements that express ‘compass’ and ‘telescope’ to suit the concept, so it might be fun to look for them!
이번 ‘The Stranger’ 안무에는 손으로 총 모양을 표현해서 추는 게 많아요! 그 외에도 컨셉에 맞게 ‘나침반’, ‘망원경’ 등을 표현한 안무들도 있기 때문에 찾아보는 재미도 있을 것 같습니다!
Can you share a memorable moment or challenge you faced while filming the music video for this album?
이번 앨범의 뮤직비디오 촬영 중 기억에 남는 순간이나 도전이 있었다면 나누어주세요.
E-TION: There was a road shoot, and the weather was so cold that day that my body kept stiffening, so I remember having to keep stretching to relax my body.
도로 촬영이 있었는데 그날 날씨가 너무 추워서 계속 몸이 굳더라고요, 그래서 스트레칭을 계속 해줬던 기억이 있습니다.
WYATT: There wasn't much difficulty, but we had an outdoor shoot on a very cold day. I regret that I tried to pretend not to be cold because I didn’t wear my own padding (padded jacket). It was so cold. But I am so glad that the results turned out well.
크게 어려운 건 없었지만, 날씨가 많이 추운 날 야외 촬영을 했었는데 사실 저는 안 추운 척하려고 개인 패딩을 안 입었다가 후회를 했습니다. 너무 추웠기 때문에요.; 그래도 그 만큼의 좋은 결과가 나온 것 같아 다행인 것 같습니다.
This album features two unit songs—OFF Team’s “Anti Hero” and ON Team’s “Nothing But A Stranger.” What can you tell us about the concepts behind each track?
이번 앨범에는 두 개의 유닛곡이 있습니다—OFF 팀의 “Anti Hero”와 ON 팀의 “Nothing But A Stranger.” 각각의 곡에 대한 콘셉트는 어떤 것들이었는지 설명해 주세요.
HYOJIN: ON Team’s unit song, "Nothing but a stranger," is an R&B genre that is hard to find (very rare) in previous ONF music. You can feel a different atmosphere, and I think many people will like it.
이번 온팀의 유닛곡 ‘Nothing but a stranger’ 는 기존의 온앤오프 음악에서 보기 힘들었던 R&B 장르 의 곡이어서 색다른 분위기도 느끼실 수 있고, 많은 분들이 좋아하실 거라고 생각합니다.
SEUNGJUN: OFF Team's unit song “Anti Hero” is a very attractive track with an intense sound. I think its thin yet powerful vocals offer an unexpected charm. This is a song where Wyatt's voice stands out in particular. The dark concept suits the OFF Team well, so it would be a good song to pair with a performance.
오프팀의 유닛곡 ‘Anti Hero’는 강렬한 사운드가 매력적인 곡이며, 가늘면서도 힘있는 목소리가 반전매력이라고 생각합니다. 특히 와이엇 파트의 목소리가 돋보이는 곡인데요, 다크한 분위기의 컨셉이 오프팀에게 잘 어울려서 퍼포먼스와 함께 하면 좋을 것 같은 곡입니다.
If ONF members had to swap roles for a day—vocalists becoming rappers, dancers switching to production—who do you think would thrive and who would struggle the most?
ONF 멤버들이 하루 동안 역할을 바꿔야 한다면—보컬이 랩을 하고, 댄서들이 프로듀싱을 한다면—누가 잘할 것 같고, 누가 어려움을 겪을 것 같나요?
HYOJIN: I think Minkyun and E-Tion would be good at rapping, and I think I would have the hardest time.
민균과 이션이 랩을 정말 잘 할 것 같고 제가 가장 어려움을 겪을 것 같습니다.
E-TION: I think it would be a little difficult for Yuto to rap because he would have to do the difficult-to-pronounce parts of Korean quickly.
아무래도 한국어 중에 발음하기 어려운 부분을 빨리 해야 하기 때문에 유토가 랩을 한다면 조금 어려울 것 같습니다.
SEUNGJUN: I think Minkyun and E-Tion will be good at rapping, and Wyatt and U will be good at producing. This is because Wyatt has leadership skills in composition, and Yuto's skills as a dance director are improving. Compared to them, I don't think I can rap.
민균과 이션이 랩을 잘할 것 같고, 와이엇과 유가 프로듀싱을 잘할 것 같습니다. 와이엇도 작곡적인 부분에서 리더쉽이 있고 유토는 댄스 디렉터의 실력이 점점 늘고 있기 때문입니다. 그에 비해 제가 랩을 못할 것 같습니다.
WYATT: I think it would be extremely difficult for me to join the vocal line. The reason is that my voice is so low, and I think it’s impossible for me to sing high notes. Our ONF songs are higher pitched than the ones I usually enjoy singing, so I think it would be difficult for me to sing.
일단 제가 보컬로 들어간다면 엄청난 고생을 할 거라고 생각합니다. 이유는 제 목소리가 워낙 저음이라 고음 자체가 불가능하며 저희 온앤오프 노래들은 제가 평소 즐겨 부르던 노래들보다 높기 때문에 어려울 것 같아 뽑았습니다.
MINKYUN: If U were to produce, I think he would do it smoothly because he would check even the smallest details. I think it would be difficult for me because I’m a person who is a bit lacking in the details.
멤버 유가 프로듀싱을 한다면 디테일한 부분까지 잘 체크하기 때문에 스무스하게 잘 할 것 같고 디테일 한 부분이 살짝 부족한 제가 어려워하지 않을까 하는 생각입니다.
U: Since E-Tion is good at rapping, so I think he would do a good job as a rapper If I were to produce, I think it would be a little difficult because there are a lot of things I don't know about producing.
이션 형은 랩도 잘하기 때문에 래퍼가 되어도 충분히 역할을 잘해 줄 것 같고, 제가 프로듀싱을 한다면 모르는 것들이 많기 때문에 조금 어렵지 않을까 합니다.
Wyatt, you participated in writing lyrics for some of the songs. Can you walk us through your creative process and what themes you wanted to express?
와이엇, 이번 앨범의 일부 곡 가사를 작성했다고 들었습니다. 창작 과정을 설명해 주시고, 어떤 주제를 표현하고 싶었는지 이야기해 주세요.
WYATT: There is a saying, “If you work with the best, you will be the best.” I think I was able to participate in writing lyrics for this album thanks to the great learning and clear feedback I received while working with our producer, Hwang Hyun. Also, I watched dramas and animations for creative purposes.
이런 말이 있죠 “최고와 함께 한다면 최고가 된다.” 우리 황현 프로듀서님과 함께 작업을 하며 많은 배움과 또 확실한 피드백이 주어진 덕분에 이번 앨범 작사에 참여할 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 또, 창작을 위해 드라마나 애니메이션 등도 챙겨 봤던 것 같습니다.
Minkyun, you contributed to composing—how does it feel to have a hand in shaping ONF’s sound? Were there any musical elements you wanted to highlight?
민균, 이번 앨범에서 작곡에도 참여하셨다고 들었어요—ONF의 사운드를 형성하는 데 기여한 느낌은 어떠셨나요? 강조하고 싶은 음악적 요소가 있었나요?
MINKYUN: We tried hard to stick to ONF's unique color, and as you will feel when you listen to the music, we think the music itself is our genre, so we put a lot of effort into the musical aspect because we think the music itself as our genre.
온앤오프만의 색깔을 고집하려고 노력을 많이 했는데, 음악을 들으면 느끼시겠지만 음악 자체가 저희 장르라고 생각하기 때문에 음악적인 부분에 노력을 많이 했습니다.
If you had to recommend one song from the album for new listeners to start with, which would it be and why?
앨범에서 새로 들을 팬들에게 추천할 곡 한 곡을 고친다면, 어떤 곡을 추천하고 그 이유는 무엇인가요?
HYOJIN: I recommend "Night Tale." We also prepared a performance for this song, and I recommend it because it is better if you listen to it while watching the performance.
‘Night Tale’을 추천합니다. 이 곡은 퍼포먼스도 준비했는데요, 퍼포먼스를 보시면서 함께 들으시면 더 좋기 때문에 추천합니다.
E-TION: I'd like to recommend ON Team’s unit song. The song is our second unit song, and although the first unit song was good, I think you will be able to hear a more mature and developed sound!
온팀 유닛곡을 추천하겠습니다. 저희의 두번째 유닛 곡으로, 첫 유닛곡도 좋지만 좀더 성숙해지고 발전한 사운드를 들으실 수 있을 것 같아요!
SEUNGJUN: I would like to recommend “Anti Hero.” It's a song with an attractive dark yet powerful beat. It's a song that makes you fall in love with the powerful sound and has a feeling that it will lead to a great performance when you imagine the stage.
‘Anti Hero’를 추천 드리고 싶습니다. 어두우면서도 강력한비트가 매력적인 곡인데요, 강렬한 사운드에 빠져들거나 또, 무대를 상상해봤을 때 멋있는 퍼포먼스까지 나올 것 같은 예감이 드는 곡입니다.
WYATT: I recommend “Night Tale,” a song that I think is just as good as the title track. The reason is that while ONF has always told stories about love purely, this song is expressed with a slightly more mature feel, and I recommend it because it seems to be a new challenge for ONF that we have never seen before.
제가 타이틀 곡만큼 좋다고 생각하는 곡인 ‘Night Tale’ 를 추천합니다. 이유는 온앤오프가 항상 사랑에 대한 이야기를 순수하게 풀어냈다면, 조금 성숙해진 느낌으로 표현된 곡이고, 지금까지 보지 못했던 온앤오프의 새로운 도전이라고 할 수 있는 곡인 것 같아 추천 드립니다.
MINKYUN: I recommend "Night Tale." It's really good when you just listen to the song, but it’s even better if you listen to it while watching the performance.

Since one of the unit songs is called "Anti Hero," if each of you were a superhero or anti-hero, what would your superpower be?
유닛곡 중 하나가 "Anti Hero"인데, 만약 여러분이 각각 슈퍼히어로나 앤티히어로가 된다면, 어떤 슈퍼파워를 가질 것 같나요?
HYOJIN: If I became a superhero, I would want to be a hero who can fly and be strong. If I were to become an anti-hero, I would want to have abilities like Venom.
슈퍼 히어로가 된다면 하늘을 날고 힘이 센 히어로가 되고 싶고, 안티히어로가 된다면 베놈 같은 능력을 갖고 싶습니다.
E-TION: I want to have the ability to teleport. I think I would use my time very efficiently.
저는 순간이동 능력을 가지고 싶어요 시간을 굉장히 효율적으로 사용할 것 같습니다.
SEUNGJUN: I want to become a water attribute hero. This is because water is a necessity for everyone, and I think you can freely adjust the water and drink water comfortably without having to go to a water purifier.
물 속성 히어로가 되고 싶습니다. 물은 누구에게나 필요한 존재이기 때문인데요, 자유자재로 물을 조정해서 정수기에 가지 않아도 물을 편하게 마실 수 있을 것 같아요.
WYATT: Among anti-heroes, I personally have always liked Joker and Venom. So, if I had the ability, I would like to have the ability to become very strong.
저는 안티 히어로 중에 개인적으로 조커와 베놈을 늘 좋아하고 있었습니다. 그래서 저는 능력이 생긴다면 힘이 매우 세지는 능력을 갖고 싶습니다.
MINKYUN: I want to have the ability to grow huge like Ant-Man because I want to carry our members on my shoulders.
엔트맨처럼 거대화 할 수 있는 능력을 가지고 싶습니다. 거대화해서 멤버들을 어깨에 태우고 다니고 싶기 때문입니다.
U: I really want to have the ability to fly. So, when I feel stuffy, I can fly in the refreshing sky!
아무래도 하늘을 나는 능력을 가지고 싶어요. 답답할 때는 시원하게 하늘을 날고 싶어요!
Last summer, you wrapped up your first-ever North American tour! What were some of the most memorable moments from that experience?
지난 여름, 첫 북미 투어를 마친 것에 대해 이야기해 주세요! 그 경험 중 가장 기억에 남는 순간은 무엇인가요?
HYOJIN: I think the most memorable and impressive thing was when the fans sang along with us during the North American tour. We were really grateful for that and were able to have a lot of fun on stage.
북미투어를 하면서 팬분들이 저희와 같이 떼창을 해 주셔서 그게 가장 기억에 남고 인상깊었던 것 같습니다. 덕분에 무대도 너무 재밌게 할 수 있었습니다.
E-TION: As the FUSEs all danced and sang along, I realized that communication through music knows no borders.
퓨즈들이 다같이 춤추며 노래를 따라 불러줘서 음악으로 하는 소통은 국경이 없구나 라는 걸 깨달았어요.
SEUNGJUN: My most memorable experience was meeting FUSE, and it was great to actually see and experience a place I had only seen in movies since I was young.
퓨즈를 만난 것이 가장 기억에 남고, 어렸을 적부터 영화로만 봐왔던 곳을 실제로 보고 느낄 수 있어서 좋았습니다.
If you could create an “ONF World Tour Bucket List,” what are three things you’d want to do in a future tour?
“ONF 월드 투어 버킷 리스트”를 만든다면, 미래의 투어에서 꼭 해보고 싶은 세 가지가 무엇일까요?
WYATT: A world tour alone is actually one of my bucket list items. If I were to tour the world, I would like to perform a duet with famous singers, perform at the Super Bowl, and lastly, perform on the streets in a foreign country. Although it is a world tour, there may be people who don't know about us, so I would like to add it to their bucket list by showcasing our ONF's street performance to make them more interested.
월드 투어만 해도 사실 버킷 리스트 중에 하나인데 만일 월드 투어를 하게 된다면 유명한 가수들과 듀엣도 해보고 싶고 슈퍼볼 공연도 해보고 싶으며 마지막으로 길거리 공연도 외국에서 해보고 싶습니다. 월드 투어이지만 저희에 대해 모르시는 분들 계실 수도 있으니 저희 온앤오프의 길거리 공연을 보여드리며 더욱 관심을 갖게 해드리고 싶어 버킷 리스트에 추가하고 싶습니다.

U: I want to try not only the extended stage (into the audience) but also the protruding stage surrounding the concert hall! There are many more things that I can show you, and I want to decorate the stage more spectacularly.
돌출무대는 물론 공연장을 둘러싼 돌출무대 공연도 해보고 싶어요! 그만큼 보여줄 수 있는 것들도 많아지고 더 화려하게 무대를 꾸미고 싶습니다.
Looking back on your journey since debut, how would you say your sound and concept have evolved over the years?
데뷔 이후 지금까지의 여정을 되돌아보며, 여러분의 사운드와 콘셉트는 어떻게 발전해 왔다고 생각하시나요?
E-TION: It seems like the messages that ONF can give have become richer, and it seems that they have developed in the sense that they are giving good messages to FUSE as well.
점점 더 온앤오프가 해줄 수 있는 메시지가 더 풍부해진 것 같고, 퓨즈들에게도 좋은 메시지를 준다는 점에서 발전해 온 것 같습니다.
MINKYUN: I've been thinking a lot since debut to now, but when I look back on things that we have done, I think ONF's unique worldview is well connected and we’ve continued to develop musically. And more than anything, I think ONF has been able to develop until now because our producer has been working hard for us.
데뷔때부터 지금까지 많은 고민을 해왔지만 지금 되돌아보면 온앤오프만의 세계관이 잘 연결 되어있고 음악적으로도 계속 발전해왔다고 생각합니다. 그리고 무엇보다 황현 PD님이 신경을 많이 써 주셨기 때문에 지금까지 쭉 발전하는 온앤오프가 되었던 것 같습니다.
