Spotlight On Joshua Lee: The Many Talents of a Rising Star

Meet Joshua Lee, a Korean-American powerhouse nestled in the heart of New York City. His captivating origin story within the entertainment world evokes the essence of a K-drama, though with a touch less drama.

Despite his academic achievements, including a degree in Computer Science and Economics from Harvard University with a language citation in Mandarin Chinese, Joshua's passion for the arts ultimately led him to pursue a career in acting. Making the bold transition from the world of Venture Capital, Joshua swiftly made waves in the industry, marking his Broadway debut by originating the role of Timmy X in the electrifying production of KPOP.

Since then, Joshua's talents have taken him on a whirlwind adventure, showcasing his versatility as an actor, dancer, and singer. From gracing the stage alongside Stray Kids at the "MTV Video Music Awards" to taking on lead roles in productions such as Josh Leong's "Sorry You Have To See This," Joshua has consistently left audiences spellbound. Most recently, Joshua wrapped filming on the highly anticipated "Gangnam Project," where he takes on the role of Supreme. As he gears up for his upcoming projects, including the lead role in Kevin Doan's indie feature "The Nightmare" in Oklahoma, Joshua Lee's star continues to rise, solidifying his status as a dynamic force in the world of entertainment.

Join me for an exclusive interview with Joshua as he shares insights into his latest endeavors and his journey towards success in the industry.

Congratulations on “Gangnam Project!” How do you feel now that the series has aired?

It feels amazing! I’m so proud of the cast, crew, and everyone who poured all of their hard work into this project. Now, I’m just excited for people to watch it and experience the beautiful world that we created.

Supreme is a dynamic character in Gangnam Project. What attracted you to this role?

Supreme and I are similar people. Supreme created his own path, one that is 180 degrees from the path that his very strict father set for him. Similarly, I received my B.A. in Computer Science from Harvard but decided to pursue my true passion, the arts. We both are our own harshest critics and strive to be the best. Finding this role felt very serendipitous and almost therapeutic because I feel like I’m finding my path forward alongside Supreme.

Having made your Broadway debut in “KPOP” and worked as a dancer for Stray Kids during the VMAs, how did your previous experiences influence your portrayal of Supreme?

During my time on Broadway, I had the opportunity to work with second-generation K-pop idols f(x), Miss A, and U-KISS, as well as newer-generation K-pop idols like Stray Kids. Hearing their stories of their time as trainees helped me understand what they had to sacrifice and learn for their passions and goals. Ultimately, this helped me create a Supreme that honored their stories within the context of the show.

Can you share any insights into the process of learning choreography for the show and how it enhanced Supreme's character development?

The amazing choreography in the show was made by Pyro, and the choreography was difficult and so fun. However, I was usually taught the choreography the day of filming (sometimes even an hour before I had to get ready to go on set), which taught me to be adaptable and get out of my own head. I think these are traits that any trainee in the rigorous world of K-pop has to learn, and this made playing Supreme feel that much more authentic.

How did the bond between cast members influence your performance as Supreme and the overall dynamic on set?

From the first day on set, the entire cast became a family. For many of us, it was our first time on a TV set, which was a blessing because we all came so open and willing to learn from one another and lean on each other during hard times. From the clips I’ve seen on the show, the chemistry between everyone is palpable, and it makes watching everyone so fun.

I have to give a special shoutout to Julia, our Hannah, for being an absolute champ. She led our entire cast as number one on our call sheet with absolute grace.
